Management Team

Matt Thurston

Director of Operations

Matt is responsible for the management and day-to-day for DDH1 Drilling’s operations. He has over 30 years experience in the drilling industry. He commenced his career at Corewell, working for Murray Pollock and founded Raematt Drilling. After growing rapidly across multiple states, Raematt attracted the attention of several listed drilling companies and the business was sold to Major Drilling in 2004. He was also the Australian Operations Manager (Surface and Underground Drilling) for Major Drilling.

Russell Chard

General Manager, East Coast

Russell is responsible for all of DDH1’s East Coast operations and is based out of Queensland. Russell joined DDH1 as East Coast Manager in 2009 with a total of 25 years' drilling industry experience including senior management roles with an international drilling company. He is very knowledgeable of the east coast market and is an expert directional driller.

Brenton Wallace

General Manager, West Coast

Brenton has over 42 years' mining experience in Australia, the Middle East, Indonesia and Thailand. During this time, he has built single rig operations and managed over 106 rigs for an international business. He has previous experience with Rio Tinto, PT Geotama, Drillcorp SE Asia, North West Drilling, and Boart Longyear. Brenton has held positions on the MDAA board and holds certificates in Management and Business, Advanced Diploma in Drilling and Safety Systems.

Sy Van Dyk

Chief Executive Officer

Sy is the CEO of DDH1 Group and brings a wealth of mining services experience and an ability to build on the culture of operational excellence, good governance and customer-focused approach. Previously Sy was the CEO & Managing Director of ASX listed Macmahon Holdings. He has held senior operational roles at the WesTrac Group and held senior positions within Kimberly-Clark (S.A) and is also a Non-Executive Director of ASX listed Austin Engineering, appointed in March 2018.

Ben Mackinnon

Chief Financial Officer

Ben brings to DDH1 a strong ability to drive systems, process and accounting excellence across the Group while delivering operational and analytical insights to the senior leadership team. Ben has 15 years of finance experience in the construction and mining services industries. He was the previous CFO at Force Equipment (acquired by Emeco) and Gavin Construction. Ben commenced his career at EY Perth, graduated from the University of Western Australia and has been a Chartered Accountant since 2005.

Andrew Venn

Executive General Manager, Corporate Services

Andrew is the EGM Corporate Services for DDH1 Group and has over 20 years' mining industry experience bringing in-depth operational knowledge, customer relationships and corporate support critical to the business. Since joining DDH1 in 2013 has held positions as Commercial Manager and Chief Operating Officer. Previously held senior positions across financing and operations for Argonaut, Orica Mining Services, and ICI Explosives. He is also a Non-Executive Director of ASX listed Saturn Metals.
